NAWA FLORIDA
The Florida Chapter was founded by Liana Moonie in 1995, and Madeline Weiss was our first President. NAWAFL is an affiliated Chapter of The National Association of Women Artists, which is a registered not-for-profit 501(c)3 corporation. As its parent organization, it offers participation of its members to highly visible Florida venues.
The Florida Chapter has its own roster of officers and committee chairs. In addition to NAWA’s quarterly newsletter, the Florida Chapter’s website and Facebook pages provide an important connective link to all its’ members. NAWA Florida currently has 80 active members exhibiting widely across the state of Florida.
To become a member of the Florida Chapter, an artist first applies for membership in NAWA, Inc. Artistic standards are maintained through a juried process. When an artist is accepted into the National Association, she may join the Florida Chapter for a greater choice in exhibition opportunities.
NAWA, Florida Chapter has an active schedule of regional exhibitions of its members’ works as well as lectures, seminars, art workshops, and other educational forums. Most of the Chapter's activities occur during the seasonal period from November to May.

NAWA History
The National Association of Women Artists was founded in 1889 by five innovative women artists. In an era when women artists were associated primarily with crafts and decorative arts, the founders of NAWA envisioned an organization which would promote higher standards for women artists and provide them with the opportunity to exhibit their work.
Early annual exhibitions included works by notable artists such as Rosa Bonheur, Mary Cassatt, and Susan Valadon. Later membership rosters include Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, Anna Hyatt Huntington, Louise Nevelson, Alice Neel, Judy Chicago, Nell Blaine, Janet Fish, Miriam Shapiro, Marisol, Audrey Flack, and Claire Romano. It is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization.
NAWA members represent all areas of the visual arts including painting, sculpture, encaustic, photography, printmaking, video art, installations, and mixed media. The organization is inclusive and serves professional women visual artists of all backgrounds and traditions that are at least 18 years of age and U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
Currently, more than 800 women artists from across the United States are members of the organization.
